Reading God’s Word: Jeremiah 20; Psalm 16

Memorizing God’s Word:  Philippians 4:6-7Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Meditating on God’s Word:  Jeremiah 20:1-2 The Temple priest Pashhur: had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the Lord’s temple. Psalm 16: 5-6 (David writing) Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.  The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

Praying God’s Word:   Lord, in our two passages today we read that You have given very different lots in life to two of your faithful servants.  Jeremiah is put in stocks and beaten.  David has a secure and pleasant life.  The contrast demonstrates that the “Prosperity Gospel” is not true.  That following You doesn’t guarantee a pleasant earthly life.  But thank you that I will spend eternity with you.
