FD 106: Exploring Our Condition and Hope
“Our wisdom… consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves” (Calvin, Instit. I.1.1). In theology, we often focus on knowing God. What theologian John Calvin is getting at in the opening words of his Institutes of the Christian Religion is that knowing God is only half, albeit an incredibly important half, of the equation! If we are to ask the question “Who is God?” we must also ask the question “Who, or what is humankind?” If we are to celebrate the salvation we have as Christians, we must also wonder what it is we’re being saved from. It’s time to search the Scriptures concerning this second half of the equation: What is humankind, what went wrong in the world, and what is the hope we have in salvation? Come join in the discovery!
