Martha’s Garden – Our Community Farms Initiative

Meeting the hunger need

One of Church of the Open Door’s values is care for the community, and we are constantly looking toward how we can come alongside the community to meet basic needs.  In Northern Ohio, access to and availability of fresh vegetables and produce is lacking for many and recently that need has been magnified.  So thanks to a grant from the City of Lorain and additional funding through your support of Missions in our Church, we have begun 3 Community Farms with the goal of growing and distributing fresh produce to those in need in our communities.  These farms are managed by Open Door, and the food distributed directly or through local food banks!

Martha Blair was a longtime member and part of Church of the Open Door.  She cared for our facilities, loved people, and prayed constantly for those in need.  In 2010, she took it upon herself to care for a small garden at Open Door Elyria, and continued with her green thumb indoors as well!  Since, she has gone to be with the Lord, but we honor her heart and passion with Martha’s Garden, and continue her memory by Loving People.
